Unlocking Success: The Power of the First Day of Class
🎧 Listen on Apple Music or Spotify
Welcome to the Good Teaching Podcast, where we explore effective teaching strategies for college instructors, with a special focus on the first day of class. I'm your host, Dr. Toyin Alli, and in this episode, we'll delve into four essential goals for a successful first day: introducing yourself and the class, clarifying expectations, establishing class culture, and demonstrating that students can learn from you.
The Purpose of the First Day of Class
On the first day, we set the tone for the entire semester. By establishing four key objectives, we can create an engaging and productive learning environment. First, we introduce ourselves and the class, creating a friendly atmosphere where students feel welcomed. Then, we clarify expectations, ensuring everyone understands their responsibilities. Next, we focus on setting the class culture, defining guidelines for interactions and learning. Lastly, we demonstrate that learning can begin right away, building student confidence from the start.
Activities for the First Day of Class
Precalculus
In a flipped class model, we use mini lectures and group work to create an interactive experience. To make learning the distance formula fun, we introduce the "crowd crumple" activity. Students work in groups, plotting points in assigned quadrants and discovering the distance formula through a collaborative process. This engaging activity helps build a sense of community and excitement in the classroom.
Calculus I
Calculus One is a mix of students with varying math backgrounds, making the first day crucial in setting the right tone. We kick off with the "Who Am I?" worksheet, where students share personal interests and thoughts on what makes a good math teacher. This icebreaker activity fosters camaraderie and encourages students to start conversations. We also emphasize the importance of precalculus as the foundation for success in the course, alleviating any concerns about prerequisites.
Applied Linear Algebra
Transitioning from computational math to using words and definitions can be daunting for students. On the first day, we engage them in a thoughtful discussion about what they believe linear algebra is about. This exercise allows us to gauge their understanding and encourage active participation. At the end of the semester, we revisit these ideas, demonstrating their growth and mastery.
Engaging and Motivating Students
Student engagement is crucial for academic success. We encourage professors to share their first-day activities on social media, fostering collaboration and inspiring others. Engaged students are more likely to succeed and thrive in their learning journey.
Conclusion
The first day of class is an opportunity to ignite curiosity and confidence in our students. By setting clear goals, using engaging activities, and promoting collaboration, we can create a positive learning environment.
