How can academics build a profitable, low-maintenance business that doesn’t demand constant attention—especially during a hectic semester?

If you’re an academic with entrepreneurial aspirations, you may often find yourself stretched thin. You’re passionate about teaching, guiding your students, and advancing in your field.

But you also have an idea that could make a real impact outside your department—a business based on the expertise you've honed over years.

The question, then, is…

How do you develop a business that complements your schedule instead of competing with it?

This training will answer this question with a method that makes your business semester-proof and allows it to operate on autopilot.

The Pitfalls of Conventional Approaches

Most business advice doesn’t consider the unique demands of academia. Imagine the typical entrepreneur’s workload:

  • social media posting

  • daily emails

  • content creation

  • many, many Zoom meetings.

Now layer that on top of grading, lectures, committee duties, research, and department meetings.

It’s exhausting just to think about, and as an academic, it’s simply unrealistic.

Consider a key finding from a 2020 survey published by Nature: 37% of mid-career researchers reported dissatisfaction with their careers due to limited advancement.

This dissatisfaction often comes from a feeling of being “boxed in” professionally, with little time for personal growth or fulfillment outside the academy. For many of us, the answer isn’t to quit academia but to find ways to create impact beyond the classroom.

Building a business around your expertise should feel like a bridge to a fuller, more balanced life—not another mountain to climb. And that’s where the concept of a semester-proof business comes in: it’s a business model tailored for academics, designed to be sustainable, profitable, and strategically automated.

The WECOT Framework

The WECOT framework gives you a precise structure for designing, launching, and running a business that doesn’t drain your energy or distract you from your teaching. Below, we’ll walk through each of the WECOT steps, with insights and examples that show why they’re essential for building a business that’s flexible and supportive of your academic commitments.

1. Words (W): Speaking the Language of Your Ideal Audience

Your audience is already looking for someone with your expertise—someone who understands them. Whether you’re offering consulting, courses, templates, or workshops, effective language is crucial.

When your audience recognizes themselves in the words you use, they’re far more likely to feel that your solution was “made just for them.”

Early on, I noticed my content resonated more when I used terms my audience related to, like “semester-proof” instead of “time-efficient” or “side hustle.” By describing their challenges (a constant to-do list, midterm crunches, etc.), I found they were more receptive to my solution.

Your Next Steps": Develop a list of questions for interviews with potential clients, like: “What frustrates you most about [the problem you help others solve]?” and “What would your ideal solution feel like?” These responses will help shape the words you use in all of your content.

2. Environment (E): Aligning with the Academic Calendar

Your environment plays a big role in the feasibility of your business model. Unlike traditional entrepreneurs, academics operate on a set schedule, dictated by semesters, exams, conferences, and deadlines. Creating a business that fits within these rhythms is crucial.

Personal Story: I designed my business around the peaks and valleys of the academic year. I tend to do big launches and promotions right before the beginning of the semester and deep creative work (like building out a course) during summer and winter breaks. During the semester, my business to relies on scheduled email funnels and evergreen content. My course and product sales continue—even at peak grading times.

Exercise: Map out your academic calendar and find the “downtime” periods, like summer or spring break, where you have the bandwidth to work on foundational business tasks. Use this as a guide to schedule content creation, launches, and other business activities.

3. Content (C): The Evergreen Content that Works for You

As an academic, you know the power of well-placed content—think of it like a paper that gains citations long after publication. Evergreen content serves the same purpose.

By creating resources that provide ongoing value, you attract customers without constant engagement.

Analogy: Imagine a YouTube video that, like an influential research article, continues to reach new audiences every month. This “hero content” can become a powerful lead magnet that works around the clock to bring in interested customers, even when you’re not actively promoting it.

Like this YouTube video that I created years ago; it gets about 1,000 views every month with zero promotion from me.

Tips for Creating Hero Content: Use formats that are likely to stay relevant, like “how-to” guides, workshops, or recorded tutorials. Think about content that could serve as a long-lasting resource and keep attracting new people.

Hero Content Checklist for Professorpreneurs

1. Evergreen Value:
☐ Does this content solve a problem your audience is actively searching for?
☐ Is the topic relevant and likely to stay useful for months or even years?

2. High Searchability:
☐ Does this content use keywords or phrases your audience is likely to search for?
☐ Is the title clear, compelling, and search-friendly?

3. Clear Call to Action (CTA):
☐ Does the content lead your audience to a next step, such as downloading a freebie, subscribing to your email list, or purchasing an offer?
☐ Is the CTA easy to find and relevant to the content?

4. Aligned with Your Offer:
☐ Does this content relate directly to a product, service, or offer you sell?
☐ Does it attract the type of audience most likely to benefit from your paid solutions?

5. Scalable Format:
☐ Is this content in a format that can reach a broad audience (e.g., YouTube video, blog post, podcast, webinar replay)?
☐ Can it be easily shared or repurposed across platforms?

6. Authority-Building:
☐ Does this content showcase your expertise and unique perspective in your niche?
☐ Does it build trust and credibility with your audience?

7. Problem Awareness & Solution-Oriented:
☐ Does this content address a specific pain point your audience faces?
☐ Does it provide actionable solutions or insights that lead them closer to your paid offer?

8. Engagement Potential:
☐ Does this content encourage interaction, such as comments, shares, or saves?
☐ Does it include storytelling, examples, or analogies to keep the audience engaged?

How to Use This Checklist

After creating a piece of content, review each item above. For maximum effectiveness, aim to check off at least 6 out of 8 points. If you fall short, revise or enhance the content before publishing to ensure it meets the standard of hero content.

By consistently creating content that passes this checklist, you’ll build a library of valuable resources that attract, engage, and convert your ideal audience over time.

4. Outline (O): Mapping the Customer Journey

Once you’ve drawn people to your content, it’s essential to have a clear path for them to follow—from first contact to purchase. This journey isn’t just about pushing a sale; it’s about answering their questions and building trust over time.

Personal Story: I created a lead magnet—a free webinar for new grad students. This training provided them with immediate value, and through a sequence of follow-up emails, I introduced my course, Grad School Prep, as a natural extension of that initial webinar. The emails were automated, allowing me to “sell” without needing to be actively involved every day.

Exercise: Map out each touchpoint in your customer journey, from the initial introduction (like a free guide or resource) to the final purchase, using an outline or flowchart to visualize the steps.

*I used Canva Whiteboard to create the flow chart below.

5. Tech (T): The Automation Tools that Run Your Business for You

With the right tech, you can automate most of your business operations, making it possible to “set and forget” many daily tasks. I recommend getting started with a simple, affordable tech stack that covers email automation, content delivery, and sales funnel management, all for under $10.

Callout: Many people assume that automation is costly or overly complicated. But with tools like email marketing software, you can create an automated system that’s both affordable and simple to set up.

My Recommendation: I recommend using Kit (formerly Convertkit) when you are just getting started. Kit makes setting up an automated email funnel super simple and they include tutorials and templates to get you started. Each tool that I use in my business is chosen to maximize efficiency without adding hours to your week.
